NYC Blog Where to use CAT6 plenum

Cat6 Plenum cable is a widely used cable for residential and industrial purposes. The Bulk Cat6 Plenum Cable has the highest safety ratings and other features. If you want to install plenum ethernet cablesstay with us as this article explores their uses, features, and standards.

So, without wasting a moment, let’s get straight to the first part: why use Cat6 Plenum Cable?

What is Cat6 Plenum Rated Cable?

The Cat6 Plenum Cable is the 6th generation twisted pair cable. It comprises 8 copper conductors twisted together in 4 pairs. To deliver extremely high performance, it uses all 8 conductors. It is backward compatible and is widely used in home networks, business networks, and data centers.

Cat6 Plenum 1000ft usage

The cable has been manufactured to be used in plenum areas of the building. The plenum areas are the parts of the buildings that facilitate air circulation for air conditioning systems and heating. They do so by providing pathways for either return airflows or conditioning/heating at a pressure that exceeds that atmospheric limit.

As plenum spaces are prone to fire eruption, the Cat6 plenum cables are designed with high-quality Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). Their jackets comprise flame-retardant PVC and insulation with FEP that help deliver high-quality performance even at high temperatures. The PVC used in Cat6 Plenum 1000ft emits less smoke and stops fire progression.

The Technical Aspects

As it supersedes Cat5e, the Cat6 Plenum 1000ft delivers a mammoth data transfer speed of 10Gbps up to a distance of 55 meters. It has a bandwidth capacity of 550MHz, which means less crosstalk and EMI. These features help in delivering strong signals throughout the network.

However, if the cable length increases to 328 feet or 100 meters, the data transfer speed equals that of Cat5e i-e 1Gbps.

The 8 conductors are either made from pure copper or are CCA (copper-clad aluminum); the former is far better than the latter when it comes to performance. So, if you don’t have any budget restrictions, it’s always better to go for pure copper ethernet cables.

The Bulk Cat6 Plenum Cable can be installed in temperatures ranging from 0 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius. It runs between 22AWG to 26AWG and comes in easy pull-box packaging.

It can work smoothly in temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius and as high as 100 degrees Celsius. The thick coating of the Bulk Cat6 Plenum Cable ensures that it keeps your network free from both near-end crosstalk and alien crosstalk. To make your signal stronger, the cable is also UV resistant.

All these features answer the first part of your question: Why use Cat6 Plenum 1000ft?

Now, let’s move to the second part of your question: when to use Cat6 Plenum 1000ft?

When to use Cat6 Plenum Cable?

The Cat6 plenum cables are designed to be used in plenum spaces of the buildings, as in these areas, the risk of fire progression is higher. It would help if you noted that you couldn’t use riser-rated or PVC-rated cables in plenum spaces. The material used in riser-rated and PVC-rated ethernet cables is not as fine as plenum cables. Because of this, you can use plenum cables in riser spaces and open-air areas, but it can’t be otherwise.

If you plan to install Cat6 plenum ethernet cables in areas with no EMI, then go for unshielded twisted pair cables. As there is no risk of interference, the signal quality will remain the same, and there’s no need for an extra layer of protection.

If you plan to use Cat6 cables in areas with EMI, you should go for shielded twisted pair cables. As there is a considerable risk of EMI, the extra layer of protection comes in handy. In STP ethernet cables, an outer cover or shield is added to each of the 4 twisted pairs. Doing so keeps all sorts of interferences at bay and ensures your signal strength is not compromised.
